Destroyer layouts in UAD and Rule the Waves 3

Fleet's Rule the Waves 3 progression is compared with UAD preferences for gun rate of fire, hull balance and torpedo-heavy auto-resolve designs.

Question

What are your preferred destroyer layouts in Ultimate Admiral: Dreadnoughts?

Short answer

Preferences range from large, fast gun-and-torpedo ships to six-launcher designs built around UAD's auto-resolve rules, while Fleet offers a separate Rule the Waves 3 progression.

Notes

Fleet's preferred layouts come from Rule the Waves 3, having not played Ultimate Admiral: Dreadnoughts for some time. For 1890-1910 he starts with two or three 2-inch guns and two centerline torpedo tubes, then increases gun caliber and tube numbers through successive designs. His 1940s preference is a roughly 2,000-ton Tribal-like destroyer with eight 4- or 5-inch dual-purpose guns and more torpedoes. The UAD preferences favor the largest, fastest practical hull, rapid-firing guns and positions that balance the ship. Suggested arrangements include two gun mounts forward and two aft, or three forward and two aft where a particular British hull benefits from that distribution. A separate design carries two forward turrets and six centerline torpedo launchers specifically to exploit the game's auto-resolve weighting of torpedoes. That last preference concerns game mechanics.
