The UB III was the most numerous German submarine design of the First World War rather than the most individually celebrated. Ninety-six boats were completed from a much larger program, and the class sank 521 ships, including the pre-dreadnought HMS Britannia. Thirty-seven UB IIIs were lost, a reminder that mass pressure came with high attrition. These general coastal attack boats supplied scale, while UC II minelayers delivered unusually effective mine warfare.
