On her second patrol, U-331 encountered three Royal Navy tank landing craft off Egypt. After a torpedo missed, the submarine surfaced and used her 88 mm deck gun, damaging one of the craft. Return fire from a 40 mm pom-pom wounded two crewmen, one fatally, and damaged the conning tower. U-331 had to reach Salamis for repairs because the damage made diving unsafe.
