U-Boats at War in 100 Objects

Gordon Williamson's object-led history uses the small Type II U-boat to connect training, treaty evasion, coastal operations, and Black Sea service.

Notes

The Type II example explains how Germany used a Dutch front company to preserve submarine design knowledge despite treaty restrictions. Its small crew, limited torpedo load, and coastal range did not prevent early operational successes, Norway service, and later training use. The class helped form Germany's first U-boat flotillas and gave future commanders a platform on which to learn their craft. Six boats were partly dismantled and moved overland to the Black Sea, showing how the book's objects open onto wider operational stories.
