How should a destroyer programme introduce unproven technology?

Four batches of three destroyers could introduce technology progressively, with earlier ships prepared to receive the final arrangement once it had proved itself.

Question

What would you do if the leaders of a destroyer project demanded all the latest technology in the first ships?

Short answer

Introduce the equipment progressively across successive batches, while designing every ship so it can receive the final proven arrangement.

Notes

The proposed response is to explain what could happen if the new equipment went wrong. Four batches of three ships could introduce progressively more advanced equipment, following the example of the previous Daring class. Each batch would develop the preceding arrangement until the final group reached the intended configuration. Earlier ships would be designed for straightforward upgrades once that equipment had proved itself. This is a suggested alternative to the actual Type 45 approach.
