Could HMS Tiger's twin mount form the basis of a modern system, and what would a heavily armed Type 83 look like?
Short answerReuse is possible but uneconomic; a purpose-built Type 83 could instead combine modern guns, layered close defense, and a very large missile battery on a cruiser-sized hull.
NotesReworking HMS Tiger's twin 6-inch mount is technically imaginable, but buying a modern catalogued Italian 76 mm system would be cheaper and more practical. The proposed Type 83 combines several 76 mm and close-in weapon systems, twin 5-inch guns, and about 192 missile cells. Such a ship would displace roughly 15,000-18,000 tons and would be a cruiser in practical role even if officially called a destroyer.
