Energy weapons and large aircraft add demands beyond VLS cells

Directed-energy weapons need power, while Chinook-sized aircraft and possible Osprey operations expand the aviation requirements.

Notes

Space for directed-energy weapons also means providing the electrical power they need. Possible railgun options are discussed alongside British interest in Japanese research, including a 3-inch system. Aviation requirements include a flight deck able to accept a Chinook-sized helicopter, with hangar accommodation for such an aircraft still under discussion. V-22 Osprey operations are another possibility. These prospective requirements would add to the combined space and power demands of the ship.
