The Type 82 procurement pinch point

HMS Bristol sat between a cheaper Type 42 comparison and the stronger political case for a much larger command ship.

Notes

HMS Bristol and the Type 82 design show how a capable ship can fall into a procurement gap. Its size and cost looked excessive beside the Type 42 to HM Treasury, yet it lacked enough additional space and capability to justify a clearly different fleet role to other parts of government. A still larger design could have offered better accommodation and command facilities while allowing advocates to argue that fewer hulls and crews would save money. Procurement survival depended on a coherent force-structure bargain as much as on improving a launcher or combat system.
