Question

Was Type 82 a destroyer or a cruiser?

Short answer

A destroyer, in the same Royal Navy classification tradition as the Daring, County, and Tribal classes.

Notes

Type 82 is classified as a destroyer rather than a cruiser. It belongs to a Royal Navy naming lineage alongside the Daring, County, and Tribal destroyer classes. That does not deny that such ships can perform parts of the cruising role. Institutional classification and operational function can point in different directions.
