Broad-beamed Type 22s, larger Invincibles, and a Type 82 fleet escort

Longer Invincibles and Bristol-derived escorts with Sea Dart and Sea Wolf could strengthen carrier air defence and release frigates for anti-submarine work.

Question

What do you think of the stretched Type 22s?

Short answer

The broad-beamed Type 22s were a good design.

Notes

Clarke's father, who worked on Type 22 and Type 23 frigates, favoured larger Invincibles and continued Bristol construction. He regarded the Invincible class as fairly good and wanted a stretched version with more aviation space and deck-edge lifts. The proposed length increase is recalled as roughly twenty to twenty-five metres. He also preferred Bristol-derived escorts with combined Sea Dart and Sea Wolf defences instead of the smaller Type 42s. A pair of these escorts with each Invincible, whose own Sea Dart launcher added another layer, could form an effective carrier force. Frigates would then have greater freedom to concentrate on anti-submarine warfare.
