Type 79 is a plausible radar fit for the counterfactual conversions because sets were already being ordered in 1938. Its roughly 30-50-mile range provides early warning, with much more limited capability than later radar systems. The installation chronology includes Sheffield in September 1938 and Rodney in January 1939. Adding the converted cruisers to the orders and providing for radar during reconstruction could therefore give them an early-warning set by the scenario's 1940 operations.

Type 79 radar as an early-warning option
An early-warning Type 79 set could be included in a conversion begun in 1938, giving the rebuilt cruisers radar before their proposed 1940 employment.
