Why HMS Daring needed a first-of-class refit

HMS Daring illustrates how operational pressure, deferred first-of-class corrections, and parts cannibalization can turn a manageable refit into a long availability problem.

Notes

The first ship of an advanced class normally returns for a substantial refit after lessons from later hulls reveal what needs correction. HMS Daring's refit was repeatedly deferred while the small Type 45 force met operational demands, allowing problems to accumulate. Removing parts from the inactive ship to keep sisters operational then prolonged the cycle. A ship can be sound in design yet badly managed when fleet numbers and maintenance capacity leave no slack.
