Type 42 economy and the split air-defence fleet

The Type 42's cost-driven ancestry and the Type 22's complementary missile fit reveal a fleet that divided area and point defence between separate escorts.

Notes

The postwar destroyer progression ran from the Tribal, Battle, and Daring classes through the County class and Type 82. The Type 42's cost-conscious design is compared more closely with the War Emergency C-class destroyers. It inherited cruiser-like air-defence work after larger carrier plans were abandoned, but equipment later judged necessary, including close-in weapons, was omitted from the original fit. The fleet then paired Type 42 Sea Dart area defence with Type 22 Sea Wolf point defence rather than concentrating both layers in each ship. That division made formations effective through cooperation but left individual ships more dependent on the right escort combination.
