Type 26 can add torpedoes through modular space

The absence of fixed tubes need not prevent Type 26 from receiving a mission-bay torpedo system later.

Question

Why does Type 26 lack torpedo tubes?

Short answer

Cost and expected engagement range may have driven the choice, but its mission bay leaves room for a future launcher.

Notes

Cost and the expectation of engaging submarines at longer range may explain the absence of fixed torpedo tubes. The design assumes helicopters and other stand-off systems will usually attack before a submarine reaches short range. Type 26 nevertheless includes substantial modular space, including a mission bay and boat-handling areas that can accept new equipment. A launcher module could therefore be added later without redesigning the entire frigate if doctrine or threat assessments change.
