Fleet numbers and the danger of a too-useful frigate

A Type 26 may be needed both beside a task group and on independent missile or escort duties, strengthening the case for more hulls.

Notes

The argument for a larger Type 26 force rests on availability as much as on anti-submarine warfare. Unlike an air-defence destroyer that should normally remain close to the group it protects, a frigate carrying land-attack missiles may be useful at some distance from it. Launching from a detached position can also complicate an opponent's effort to trace missile flight paths back to the main force. That flexibility creates competition between escort work and independent missions, making a small fleet harder to employ.
