Could an up-armed Type 26 be ordered to supplement Type 45 destroyers?
Short answerIt is doubted because completion of the Type 26 build is expected to coincide with the need to replace ageing Type 45s.
NotesThe projected Type 26 programme extends well into the 2030s and possibly towards the 2040s. By then, Type 45 destroyers that entered service in the 2000s would be around thirty years old. That timing shifts attention from supplementing them to building their replacements. The objection concerns the construction schedule and the age of the fleet when the additional ships would become available.
