What selling three Type 23s cost in fleet availability

The reduction from sixteen Type 23s to thirteen removed maintenance and deployment flexibility beyond a simple one-for-three calculation.

Notes

The Type 23 began as a relatively inexpensive way to increase anti-submarine numbers, with early concepts carrying a towed sonar array without a gun or air-defence missiles. Its eventual armament made the class more useful as Britain's wider frigate force contracted. Selling three of the sixteen ships to Chile reduced the fleet to thirteen and removed some of its resilience. The availability estimate used here allows roughly eight ships to be generated from sixteen, with occasional scope for more. On that estimate, losing three hulls cannot simply be treated as losing one operational ship under a fixed rule of three.
