Type 23 outlived assumptions about protection and replacement

A light ASW frigate became an independent workhorse for decades, stretching assumptions about stronger escorts, timely upgrades, and replacement.

Notes

Type 23 upgrades arrived slowly, while the ships took on duties beyond the protected ASW role envisaged for them. They were considered under-armed for the frequency with which they operated independently. Some early proposals had been far more austere, approaching a vessel carrying only a towed-array sonar, and Falklands veterans resisted that approach. Even the accepted design assumed that Type 22s and their successors would supply more powerful ships alongside the light frigates. It also assumed short service lives and replacement on schedule. The later workload exposed the limits of those expectations.
