The Type 22's post-Falklands gun lesson

Later Type 22 frigates gained 4.5-inch guns after the Falklands exposed the limits of missile-focused escorts in littoral and shore-support missions.

Notes

The first two Type 22 batches were designed for North Atlantic operations against the Soviet Navy. Their strong air-defense and anti-submarine systems suited that mission, but the ships lacked a medium gun and were poorly equipped for inshore fighting or fire support. Later Type 22s such as HMS Chatham, HMS Marlborough, and HMS Richmond carried a 4.5-inch weapon that could support troops ashore. Their post-Falklands fit shows how wartime experience widened the class's mission set. Missiles and anti-submarine systems remained appropriate for the intended ocean fight, while amphibious warfare demanded more flexibility close to shore.
