Type 21 aluminium and fire risk

The Type 21 discussion separates aluminium construction from the flammable coatings and maintenance choices that magnified fire damage.

Notes

Aluminium itself was not the simple culprit often presented in accounts of Falklands losses. Suitable coatings and careful construction could make it workable, while economy measures and combustible coatings could carry heat into the structure and worsen a fire. Joining aluminium and steel sections was difficult but achievable. Material choice therefore cannot be separated from coatings, maintenance, and construction quality.
