How Types 12, 14, and 15 formed an escort family

The Type 12 was part of a broader Royal Navy response that paired new specialist escorts with rebuilt destroyers and more economical second-rate frigates.

Notes

Alongside the Type 12, the Royal Navy rebuilt wartime destroyers as fast Type 15 anti-submarine frigates and planned the Type 14 as a more utilitarian second-rate escort. Together they combined purpose-built first-rate escorts, economical conversions, and a cheaper second tier. The result was a family of answers to the same submarine threat rather than a single ideal design. The Type 12 hull and its design ideas then influenced several generations of Royal Navy frigates. HMS Whitby is the Type 12 example, a Cammell Laird ship, while HMS Malcolm is named as the readily illustrated Type 14 comparison.
