Chapter · 2:10:49-2:16:21

A 12,000-ton cruiser keeps yards and designers busy

Raising the cruiser ceiling to 12,000 tons creates an immediate break from Omaha and invites twelve-gun heavy-cruiser designs.

Notes

A 12,000-ton ceiling creates enough distance from Omaha to make immediate American construction politically defensible and physically compatible with an expanded Charleston yard. Keeping eight-inch guns looks like a concession to treaty supporters while the extra displacement sustains qualitative competition among designers. British County and American Pensacola descendants could both mount twelve eight-inch guns instead of converging on the historical 10,000-ton pattern. Such cruisers would make German pocket battleships far less comfortable commerce raiders because speed and a much heavier broadside would narrow their tactical freedom.
