What makes an odd ship design work

Unconventional ships qualify by carrying out a designed function, even when that ability fails to justify the vessel.

Notes

The twelve examples include commercial and research vessels as well as warships. An unusual design qualifies if it can carry out its intended function, although that does not guarantee operational usefulness. The Nelson class and Korean turtle ships are omitted because they have already received substantial attention. Hydrofoil missile boats follow the familiar pursuit of greater speed, while monitors are treated as an established design type. Ise and Hyuga illustrate the distinction between making an aviation installation function and giving a ship a useful mission.
