Why VLS escaped the firing-arc problem

Vertical launch systems let missiles rise before turning, avoiding the superstructure constraints faced by traversing guns and swing-arm launchers.

Notes

The heavy-gun firing-arc problem continued into missile-era launcher design. Gun turrets and later swing-arm launchers must train around a ship's superstructure, which restricts the directions in which they can fire. A vertical launch system sends the missile upward before it turns, so the launcher itself does not require the same clear horizontal arc. VLS is another answer to the recurring problem of fitting and directing powerful weapons from limited deck space. The comparison presents Monitor's legacy as a continuing engineering question without claiming that modern ships simply copy its turret.
