Chapter · 5:24-9:32

Turret selection as a whole-ship design problem

A design-game test bed introduces turret layout as a choice constrained by the hull and the ship around it.

Notes

A hypothetical 18-inch-gun battleship frames turret layout as a whole-ship problem: a visually attractive arrangement is not automatically a workable warship. The test reconstruction gives Agincourt eight 18-inch guns, while the surviving clues leave open whether the real design was intended as an 18-inch battleship or as a step toward one. A separate six-gun formation appears in work associated with Renown, but the link remains suggestive rather than conclusive. Gun size, hull dimensions, reconstruction choices, and protected magazine space set the limits before alternative layouts can even be compared.
