Turret layouts balanced accuracy, arcs, and redundancy

Turret designers had to choose between independently elevated guns, common mechanisms, firing arcs, and the risk that one failure could disable a whole mounting.

Notes

A turret's arc of training and the way its barrels are elevated affect both the ship's fighting options and its shell pattern. Independently elevated guns provide flexibility and redundancy, but small differences between their mechanisms can widen a salvo at long range. A common elevation mechanism can keep the barrels aligned more closely, yet one failure can then disable the entire mounting. Designers could compromise by dividing a four-gun turret between two mechanisms, limiting both alignment differences and the consequences of one breakdown.
