Chapter ยท 21:24-25:03

Turning technology into usable volume

Military research must convert scientific promise into reliable equipment available in sufficient quantity and usable under combat conditions.

Notes

A country can have advanced research companies and still lack equipment available to its armed forces at useful scale. Military research must turn an idea or one-off testbed into equipment that can be manufactured in volume. That equipment must be usable by sailors, soldiers, and airmen rather than only by specialists in controlled laboratory conditions. Combat operators may be tired, dirty, exposed to weather, and attending to many dangers at once, so reliability and usability are strategic requirements. Better training lets personnel handle more capable equipment and reduces the need to simplify it. That can save research spending while allowing the state to use more advanced technology.
