Turbine-class losses and the air threat

Seven of the eight Turbine-class ships were lost to aircraft or aircraft-laid mines, exposing their limited margin for adaptation.

Notes

The fates of all eight Turbine-class ships reveal a striking pattern. Aquilone and Borea were lost in September 1940 at Benghazi, while Nembo, Ostro, and Zeffiro were sunk by Swordfish from HMS Eagle. Euro later fell to German aircraft after Italy changed sides, and Turbine was destroyed by American aircraft in 1944. Espero alone was lost in surface combat, sunk by HMAS Sydney during a troop-transport mission. Seven of the eight losses therefore came from aircraft or aircraft-laid mines. The class had little adaptation margin once aircraft became central to Mediterranean combat, exposing the gap between its torpedo-boat assumptions and the war it fought.
