Its covered navigation and observation spaces improved crew working conditions and restored useful map space for spotting and reconnaissance duties. Soundproofing, heating, and even a toilet reflected an effort to make long missions less punishing for the three-person crew. The original scheme also considered a powered rear turret, another sign that the designers were building protection and crew facilities into the platform rather than simply reproducing the Swordfish. Those benefits came with greater weight and a structure that was more difficult to repair than the Swordfish's fabric-covered airframe. Metal skin also brought a combat tradeoff: it was more likely to set off cannon shells that might otherwise pass through fabric without detonating.
