Chapter · 8:35-10:12

Japan's incomplete 1939 carrier force

A January 1939 war catches Japan before the carrier force, aircraft, and operational readiness associated with the Pacific War are fully in place.

Notes

Japan's carrier force in this scenario is compared with the larger pool of British, American, and French assets. Akagi has been lost, Ryujo carries a comparatively small air group, and the concentrated Kido Butai familiar from 1941 does not yet exist. British options include Eagle, Hermes, Argus, Glorious, Courageous, Furious, the newly commissioned Ark Royal, and Illustrious-class ships nearing service. Pegasus appears as a seaplane carrier and aircraft transport, with a role likened to the later support carrier HMS Unicorn. Later Japanese advantages cannot be projected backward because newer ships and aircraft were still incomplete, unlaunched, or unavailable for operations. An early conflict therefore produces a sharply different carrier balance.
