Why trolley launch gear is harder at sea

Graf Zeppelin’s trolley system was technically capable, but recovering and maintaining it amid ship motion, salt water, and combat wear would challenge sustained flying operations.

Notes

Graf Zeppelin’s trolley was technically workable, but wartime reliability mattered more than a successful demonstration. Recovering and maintaining the equipment at sea exposed it to ship motion, salt water, and wear. German and British scouting-aircraft installations showed that support mechanisms could fail while the aircraft remained usable. Simpler British arrangements traded some launch performance for easier repairs and continued service.
