Triumph's rebuild links the galleon to the frigate form

HMS Triumph's long career shows how a high-sided Elizabethan galleon could be rebuilt into a faster frigate-built form as naval institutions matured.

Notes

Triumph began as the largest English ship of Elizabeth I's reign and served for nearly sixty years. A great rebuild changed her from a high, squat forecastle galleon into a lower, faster frigate-built ship by substantially reshaping the hull. Her continuing name masks a major change in form and performance. Repeated rebuilding also tracks the deeper professionalization and institutional memory that developed under the early Stuarts, the Interregnum, and the later seventeenth-century monarchy.
