Bomb damage ends Trinidad's return voyage

A Ju 88 bomb reopens Trinidad's damaged area during her attempt to return home, forcing HMS Matchless to scuttle the cruiser.

Notes

Partial repairs at Murmansk allow Trinidad to sail at a maximum of about 20 knots with four destroyers escorting her home. A massed attack by twenty Ju 88s scores one hit beside the earlier torpedo damage, where the repair yard had only been able to make a temporary patch. The bomb starts a serious fire and kills 63 more people, including twenty survivors from HMS Edinburgh. Seven Czechoslovak airmen en route to Great Britain were also aboard, and several were among those killed. HMS Matchless torpedoes Trinidad on 15 May 1942 because the fire and combined damage make saving her impossible. The loss joins an already damaged cruiser, survivors from an earlier sinking, and Allied personnel still in transit.
