The Tribal class took cruiser-like work with the Home and Mediterranean fleets, freeing scarce cruisers for the Far East and South Atlantic. The wartime Battle class carried the same demand into an emergency hull packed with fighting equipment. Postwar Darings restored room for diplomacy and overseas presence while retaining the heavy-destroyer lineage. A report to Churchill about sending Darings to Syria asked whether they had the accommodation for entertaining and representational duties expected of a cruiser. Royal Navy planners judged a globally deployed ship by its peacetime access and accommodation as well as its weapons.
