Chapter · 10:52-12:17

Why the Tribal class looked like back-pocket cruisers

Eight 4.7-inch guns, a cruiser-like layout, and nearly 2,000 tons gave the Tribals the firepower and presence to substitute for light cruisers in selected roles.

Notes

The design used four twin 4.7-inch gun mountings instead of a large torpedo battery. Its gun distribution and cruiser-like silhouette reflected missions beyond the traditional destroyer attack role. The nominal 1,850-ton treaty figure proved optimistic, and the ships entered service somewhat heavier as the treaty limits lapsed. They were substitute cruisers for scouting, fleet work, diplomatic visits, and duties that freed true cruisers for distant stations.
