The Tribal class traded part of the usual torpedo battery for gun power that could clear enemy screens ahead of torpedo-heavy flotilla partners. Pairing a Tribal with destroyers carrying ten torpedoes preserved the flotilla's total salvo while adding much stronger forward and retreating gunfire. The allocation of weapons mattered across the formation as well as aboard each hull. This combination let ships with different armament emphases cooperate in the same fleet-screening role.
