Why game destroyer range can misrepresent history

A Tribal-versus-German destroyer test shows how turret stabilization and game range values can distort historical comparisons.

Notes

The simulation gives German 5.9-inch guns a much larger range advantage over British 4.7-inch weapons, although the historical 4.7-inch gun was much closer in range. The historical comparison also depends on mounting and handling because the real German guns were largely single and unstabilized. Reproducing the Tribal's effective range and rate of fire would require ahistorical gun or turret choices inside the game. The result raises useful historical questions, but it cannot serve as direct evidence of ship performance.
