Treaties soften the British-American power transition

The historical treaty system is framed as an unusually peaceful transfer of leading-power status from Britain to the United States.

Notes

The real interwar negotiations achieved an unusually peaceful transfer of primacy. Great-power transitions commonly culminate in war between the old leader and the challenger. Britain and the United States instead adjusted their relative positions through treaties while later fighting major wars on the same side. Removing those agreements also removes part of the diplomatic machinery that kept the transition peaceful.
