Article 1 recognizes Chinese and Korean independence while allowing Britain and Japan to protect their own special interests there. British interests center on China, while Japan also claims a particular political, commercial, and industrial interest in Korea. Article 2 requires neutrality when one partner fights a single power, and Article 3 promises support if another enemy joins. Article 4 bars separate agreements that prejudice the alliance, while Article 5 requires frank communication when the covered interests are threatened. Article 6 sets an initial five-year term and provides for termination on a year's notice. These clauses combine imperial spheres of influence with a limited mutual-defense commitment.
