Treaties and budgets shaped submarine size

Interwar submarine design reflected treaty limits and procurement economics as well as doctrine and operating geography.

Notes

Tactical doctrine was one influence on Royal Navy submarine design. Interwar treaties constrained size and displacement, while budgets affected which boats could be ordered. Submarines and destroyers were comparatively easy to defend as purchases beside cruisers, battleships, and aircraft carriers. The resulting designs joined operational requirements to the legal and financial limits of the interwar fleet.
