Why one Atlantic cruise could not create readiness

A successful Atlantic cruise could not substitute for sustained sea time across the Allied fleet.

Notes

The scale of the losses leads back to the Allied fleet's preparation. Its cruise across the Atlantic had succeeded, but the voyage did not make up for a broader lack of time at sea. The fleet continued to experience serious difficulties after its return. One successful operation therefore offered little proof that the combined fleet was ready to handle a major battle.
