Would a Town-class or County-class cruiser be the more dangerous opponent for a German surface raider?
Short answerBoth are dangerous in different ways, and their shadowing and reporting may matter more than the immediate gun duel against a heavy raider.
NotesA Town-class cruiser could smother a comparable opponent in shellfire before closing for a torpedo attack. A County-class ship would instead rely on its heavier guns to batter the target. Bismarck or Scharnhorst could accept such a fight from a position of strength. A German heavy cruiser or Deutschland-class raider would be more concerned because the British cruiser could shadow it, report its position, and call stronger forces into the hunt.
