Could the Town-class cruisers have been converted into missile ships, and why were they ultimately retired?
Short answerA conversion replacing the after turrets was feasible in principle, but machinery fatigue and refit costs made continued service unattractive.
NotesA Town-class hull probably had enough space to accept a larger triple rapid-fire six-inch mounting rather than only the twin arrangement suggested by a viewer. A missile conversion would then likely have removed X and Y turrets to create space for the new battery. The limiting issues were accumulated machinery fatigue and the cost of another major reconstruction. Even unusually flexible hulls eventually reach a technical and economic endpoint.
