Town-class adaptability delayed the next cruiser

The Town class remained so adaptable that repeated refits weakened the funding case for a purpose-built postwar cruiser.

Notes

The Town-class cruisers could absorb enough modernization to remain useful while budgets favored carriers and nuclear submarines. That success repeatedly encouraged the Admiralty to extend existing ships instead of funding replacements. By the time the Towns were exhausted, guided missiles, post-Suez retrenchment, and changed fleet priorities made the case for a new cruiser much harder to win.
