Torpedo boats had to survive opposing torpedo boats and gun-armed craft designed to hunt them. The resulting requirement was a vessel fast and heavily armed enough to defeat those opponents while still threatening larger warships with torpedoes. That combination produced the torpedo boat destroyer as a distinct type. The new destroyers combined capabilities that earlier experimental craft had been approaching. A parallel concerns the super-dreadnought label: the Orion class received it on introduction with 13.5-inch guns, while the later Queen Elizabeth class often dominates recollections of the type. Ship labels can become associated with later designs even when earlier vessels introduced the defining features.

The torpedo boat destroyer closes the light-force cycle
Once torpedo boats and torpedo gunboats could fight one another, navies needed a faster craft able to defeat both while retaining its own torpedo attack.
