Torpedoes turn a protected cruiser into a costly risk

Bausan's mixed battery and torpedoes demonstrate how a modest cruiser could threaten a stronger opponent with disproportionate losses.

Notes

The light guns were useful against small craft, while three 14-inch torpedo tubes gave a protected cruiser at least a chance to damage a battleship or armored cruiser. Ships of this type served as risk-fleet instruments: individually beatable, but dangerous enough that a stronger fleet could not treat combat as cost-free. A lucky shell or torpedo could turn an easy victory into a strategically ruinous one, especially when a crew understood that accurate fire was its only route to survival. The poorly trained and underfunded Spanish fleet of 1898 serves as the counterexample to that deterrent logic. Italy's growing investment in exercises, ships, and personnel made Bausan a more credible risk than paper specifications alone suggest.
