An old warship and a young captain enter the same line

The British line paired the century-old HMS Torbay with 24-year-old Captain Robert Manners, already a veteran of long naval service.

Notes

HMS Torbay entered the battle at roughly a century old, showing how long a maintained wooden hull could remain useful. Nearby, HMS Resolution was commanded by Robert Manners at only 24 years of age. He had nevertheless already served for nearly twelve years, a reminder that naval careers could begin in childhood. Manners received wounds from which he later died. The juxtaposition complicates simple assumptions about age and experience: ships could be very old while their commanding officers were young but far from inexperienced.
