Was Tone's pyramid turret arrangement an efficient way to concentrate heavy guns and armour?
Short answerIt could shorten the armoured space in principle, but Tone's long forward layout made the superfiring turret's extra weight difficult to justify.
NotesA viewer notes that a pyramid arrangement can condense several heavy turrets into a short armoured space, as on Nelson-like layouts. This is a genuine armour-distribution argument. The tradeoff is less persuasive on Tone because the forward gun group already occupied a long part of the hull. In that setting, the superfiring turret added weight and topweight without producing the compact arrangement that normally justified it.
