Tone class aviation park and unreplaceable scouts

Tone put all four main turrets forward and reserved the stern for six floatplanes, making reconnaissance central to the ship's layout.

Notes

Tone's four twin 8-inch turrets were grouped forward, leaving the stern to support six floatplanes and two catapults. The layout made the scouting function visually obvious while retaining guns and torpedoes for the class's fighting roles. Its open aviation park lacked a true hangar, however, and concentrated valuable aircraft handling in an exposed area. With only two ships in the class and no direct replacements available, the design shows doctrine shaping scarce cruisers around an indispensable reconnaissance mission.
