Titanic was intended as the jewel of White Star's four-stack liners. She was no isolated technical project. Competition between battle fleets demanded extensive infrastructure, while one exceptionally large, fast, and glamorous liner could carry enormous prestige by itself. Britain already measured national power through its navy, so losing the civilian liner contest could appear a conspicuous failure even when Germany could not catch the Royal Navy in warships. Commercial rivalry and national pride gave schedule, scale, speed, and appearance unusual weight in the design story.
